We had been looking for quite a while for some sort of activity that Noah would really enjoy doing. He was adamant about not playing sports. Even though he seemed early on to have an ear for music, that interest seems to have dwindled. When I tried to sign him up for karate, he freaked out because he thought I wanted to take him to a place so kids could kick him and karate chop him, and he had to defend himself from that.
Sigh...
Finally, a flyer for Cub Scouts came home with him from school and I thought that might be JUST the thing. We wanted him to learn more about respect, working together, service to others, pride, and build up his self esteem a little bit.
I took him to one meeting and he just LOVED it.
LOVED. IT.
And immediately after that, we had an opportunity for one of us to spend a weekend at Camp Mataguay with him for lots of cub scout fun! So I stayed home with the twins, and Michael took Noah to camp for two nights this weekend.
They got to go fishing ("We caught a bunch of WEEDS!") and hiking. Noah was able to learn how to do archery and shoot BB guns, he threw a vase on a pottery wheel for me, they went canoeing watched skits, and Noah spent a lot of much needed quality time with his Dad.
Next time... I wanna go!

A Scouting We Will Go!

What a great time they must have had! :-) Maybe Noah has found something he will truly like.
How wonderful - a new blog AND a good report! My son, also not-a-sports-guy, loved scouts. The steps for learning a skill are clearly set out (i.e. badge requirements) and that gave him the confidence to learn things that might otherwise have put him off (and, I think, the realization that he could master anything he wanted). And the scout masters in his troop were wonderful examples of husbands and fathers for him to look up to. I hope Noah's experience will be as good.
First of all--it's about time that you posted on your blog!!! Secondly, I'm so glad that Noah got to go camping and that he had a ball. Loved the picture of him with his bullseye. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that scouting will be exactly what he needs. It seems to be a really good start.
Looks like they had a great time! Hopefully Michael got to do some of the fun things too :-)
oh, and looks like Noah has good form in the archery picture... way to go!
Scouting (be it boys or girls) is a great way to build self esteem. It's nice that Noah has found something that interests him. And to get to do a camp out right off the bat - priceless! Great experience, plus bonding time with dad!!
As a former Girl Scout leader, I highly recommend these programs!!
